  • Notes
    • Henry Tripp was born in Bristol, England on April 15, 1784. He was the son of Lt. John Tripp, a British sailor who was drowned when Henry was three years old. His mother later married George Cavinder. As a young man, Rev. Henry Tripp served in the British Navy under Lord Nelson until the Battle of Trafalgar. At some time in his career, he also served in the American Navy under Commander Preble. On November 24, 1810 he married Hannah Stoneham by whom he had five children: John and Daniel, who both died in infancy, Mary; Henry Tripp, Jr., and Samuel. The last three were all born while Reverend Tripp was serving in Jamaica as a Baptist Missionary. After the death of his first wife, Hannah, Reverend Tripp returned to England where he married her sister, Elizabeth Stoneham, on September 1, 1823. By his second wife, Reverend Tripp had seven children: John Daniel, who died in infancy, John D., Joseph, and Hannah Tripp--all born in England; Juliana, born in Cleveland, Ohio; and Emily Elizabeth and Robert H. Tripp, both born at Sand Lake in Franklin Township, Michigan.About 1829 Reverend Tripp came to America. He settled on 160 acres near the shore of Sand Lake in Franklin and Cambridge townships in 1831 or 1832. Reverend Tripp was active in all phases of township government and culture. He was present at the organizational meeting for the township and is credited with naming the township, Franklin. Also, Reverend Tripp has the distinction of being the first man to cast a vote for the Liberty party in Franklin.Reverend Tripp died July 19, 1863 at the age of 79 years, 3 months. He was buried in the Franklin Township Cemetery where his grave may still be seen.
