Notes - John William Tripp is my Grandfather.
John William Tripp is the son of David Tripp, son of David R. Tripp, son of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. John William Tripp, like his father, also barely made it. His father David Tripp died when he was only six months old. He never got to know his father, but stories handed down by his children indicate that he did know his mother, even though she left him to be raised by his Great Aunt Mahala Snelson Reynolds. Grandpa was not too happy with that arrangement, but we need to give his mother Mary Evaline Williamson Tripp the benefit of the doubt. She was married to David when she was seventeen and was a widow at Twenty-one years of ag with three children, all under 5 years of age!
Even though John William Tripp did not talk about his background, it is obvious that he knew about his father and family. His third son George's middle name is David after his father, and his second son Ernest's middle name is Ralph after his uncle Ralph that died tragically in the fatal month of May 1855, when the whole Tripp family was decimated. Part of the reason for his non discussion of his past, was his intense devotion to his own family, 5 boys and one girl!! Of special interest to me, is the fact that he named his first-born son, Joseph after Joseph P. Reynolds, his foster father. Grandpa tells the story about getting a riding horse for his 16th birthday, when he was expecting a team and wagon, but I think that Mr. Reynolds did a pretty good job raising my Grandfather, John William Tripp! John William Tripp grew up near Rose Hill, Mahaska County, Iowa, where he had many close friends as his autograph book clearly shows. His foster mother had given him the book as a present and he promptly made good use of it by getting numerous messages from his friends and classmates. One of the messages was written by his future wife Alice Myrttle Sanford! They evidently were long time friends and got serious enough to get married, after they both worked for the Hibbs family. They were married in Polk County and had all of their children near Mitchellville Iowa. Grandpa was an Elder at the local Church of Christ, where my Dad and other members of the family belonged. In 1915 the family moved to Boone County, Iowa. I am sure that the girls were all glad to see five boys move into the community, because they were all eligible a and they all did marry in that community. Dad (Joseph Raymond Tripp) married my Mom Florence Marjorie Shedd who grew up in the neighborhood. Uncle Ernie (Ernest Ralph Tripp) married Mable Ball (my Aunt Mable Ernie) one week after Dad and Mom got married; they "stood up for each other" and settled down within a couple of miles of each other, near Napier, Boone County, Iowa. Uncle George (George David Tripp) married Mabel Kitchen (my Aunt Mabel George) and promptly moved on a farm half way between his two older brothers! Uncle Gerald (Gerald Sanford Tripp) married Velda Stuart (my Aunt Velda) moved on a farm a little farther away from the other three. Uncle Harris (Harris J Tripp) married Zelma Slaughter (my Aunt Zelma) and moved to the Truro area, which is south of Des Moines. Uncle Harris welded many years for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines. Aunt Mary (Mary Alice Tripp) married Millerd Lee (my uncle Millerd) fifty yeas ago, February 27 1988. They have always farmed in Story County, and are retired in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. All the Tripps have been a close knit family which pleased Grandpa very much. In 1932 John William Tripp (I was named after him) was making hay at his place north of the Lincoln Highway in Story County. He was on the hayrack holding onto the trip rope that he used to "trip" the hay loose, once the fork full of hay entered the big hay barn door. When the hay entered the barn, he pulled on the rope as he had done many, many times before. This time--the rope broke! Grandpa fell backwards, hit the ground--broke his neck! He said "Don't touch me." A few days later, in his own home, in a hospital bed, he visited with me as if nothing had happened. When he tried to drink water from a straw he said "Herman, I hope that you never, ever need to go through something like this!" So far I never have! I am 68, My Grandpa Tripp was 59. He died the next day. I was 9 years old! Herman WILLIAM Tripp--Remembering----
John Woodford Snelson died from a fall from a load of hay in 1946. John William Tripp died from a fall from a load of hay in 1932. They were first cousins!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----
