Notes
David Is My Great Grandfather David " WAS LOST FOR 104 YEARS " Tripp I hope that David had some enjoyment in his short life. He was certainly very important to our lives, even though we did not even know his name for over 100 years! David barely made it. He was born 3 months and 3 days after his father, David R. Tripp's death. After his birth February 3,1846 in Davies County Indiana, he saw enough grief to last a long lifetime, let alone a short one. His older brother Ralph, his sister-in-law Martha Davis Tripp, his nephew, little John Tripp, and his older sister Caroline, all died in 1855. He was 9 years old! His mother died in 1858 when he was 12! Here again, we can see the importance of big brother ZZacheus Lester Tripp! Zacheus, now married and living in Kentucky brought David, his two sisters Mary Adeline and Nancy Jane over to live with him. William Henry Harrison Tripp also came to Kentucky to be with the surviving Tripp family. William, now 18 years old, went to work as a farm hand for a neighbor, to help hold the family together. Zacheus, the head of this household was 24 years old! Zacheus rented and farmed various pieces of land in Union County, Kentucky and for onone year owned 100 acres. He with David and William raised corn, barley and tobacco. They did it with 2 or 3 horses and mules so they had to hustle! David started farming in 1864 when he was 18, but he did not own a horse until 1869. He obviouslusly farmed with his brother Zacheus, so that he could use his brothers equipment and horses--just like today! Davids sister, Nancy Jane was now working for a neighbor whose name was Mathew H. Owens. Zacheus had fought in the Civil War as a Sargent under Mathew H. Owens who was his Master Sargent. Mathew H. Owens was a minister of the gospel and a carpenter who was building homes in the area. He had lost two wives and together with the present wife Evaline Snelson Williamson Owens, had 18 children. Evaline Snelson Williamson Owens had a daughter named Mary Evaline Williamson from her first marriage, living with her, and as boys will be boys and girls will be girls, David Tripp next door, met Mary Evaline Williamson. They fell in love and were married May 21,1867. He was 21, she was 17. They were married at the courthouse in Morganfield, Union County, Kentucky by a Methodist Minister, Reverend James S. McDaniel, in front of neighbors Hiram McElroy, John W. Loockett, R. A. Waller, and others. In the meantime, Evaline Snelson Williamson Owens, Mary Evalines mother, died. Nancy Jane Tripp (David's sister) soon after, married Mathew H. Owens on November 14 1867. Nancy Jane married into a passel o of kids, and eventually had eight of her own, to give Mathew H. Owens a total of 26 children from 4 wives. David and Mary Evaline had three children pretty fast, and it is a good thing or we would not be here, because Grandpa John William Tripp was born the last year of David's life!! It is hard not to dwell on the tragedies of life, same as today, but David did live a full lifetime very fast! He is our Great Grandfather at last!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering---- We have not been able to find David's burial place. His sister Nancy Jane Owens is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Bordley, Kentucky. His brother, Zacheus, who helped raise him, buried two daughters at this same cemetery. It is therefore reasonable to assume that he may have been buried there too. Everyone was so poor in those days that wooden crosses were probably used to mark the graves. The wooden crosses are long gone! There are two small stones marking the graves of Zacheus' daughters however. Clara and I have set them up many times, but the next time we visit, they are hard to find because of the overgrowth.
